2-up flyer for the March 10th, 2015 Seattle meetup

I added a flyer in PDF format, File:2-up Den Coffeehouse Bothell 2015-03-10.pdf, for the March 10th, 2015 Seattle meetup at The Den Coffeehouse in Bothell, WA. Peaceray (talk) 14:53, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Considerations around Cascadia inclusion

Problems with systematic bias in technology-based projects including Wikipedia are well documented. How can we actively work towards greater inclusion of Cascadians and Cascadia topics in Wikimedia projects?

Native Americans

Cascadia groups that are particularly affected by this might include Native Americans. At the 3/24/2015 meetup, Brianhe, Pine and Peaceray discussed ways to increase outreach to Native Americans. One idea was to do a meetup or editathon at a tribal center. Another was simply to contact tribal leadership and see if they would like to initiate something. Topics of mutual interest could include:

  • Documentation of tribal lands
    • Mapping projects
    • Photography projects
  • Language preservation
  • Native species habitat conservation
  • Travel and eco-tourism involving tribal entities

Within reasonable driving time for a collaborative event are the Snoqualmie, Tulalip, and Suquamish (includes ferry crossing from Seattle or Edmonds). - Brianhe (talk) 17:48, 25 March 2015 (PDT)

Youth

Also touched on at the 3/24 meetup was youth outreach, perhaps working towards writing for Wikipedia in Washington state history classes. We could leverage existing Wikipedia/media institutions. - Brianhe (talk) 18:19, 25 March 2015 (PDT)

Hispanic community

At the February, 2015 "I Love to You" editathon at UW, Brianhe and Digitalxicana collaborated on the article wikipedia:KDNA and discussed further collaboration on items documenting the Hispanic community in Washington. This is another possible area of outreach.

Board members in the news (sort of)

Our board member Sage appeared briefly on last weekend's 60 Minutes segment on Wikipedia. One step closer to world domination! Brianhe (talk) 20:56, 10 April 2015 (PDT)

Congratulations. Also, the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Pasteur which was shown momentarily in the video includes a lede image that I put there. So there is evidence of 2 Cascadians in that video :D. --Pine (talk) 13:34, 18 April 2015 (PDT)
